Cannabidiol (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are the two most prominent cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. While they share the same chemical formula, their atoms are arranged differently, leading to distinct effects on the body.
Psychoactive Effects
The main difference is that THC is psychoactive, meaning it produces the "high" associated with marijuana use. CBD, on the other hand, is non-psychoactive and does not cause intoxication.
Medical Benefits
Both compounds have medical benefits:
- THC: Effective for pain relief, muscle spasticity, glaucoma, insomnia, and low appetite.
- CBD: Used for anxiety, depression, inflammation, seizures, and migraines.
Legal Status
In the US, CBD derived from hemp (containing less than 0.3% THC) is federally legal. THC remains federally illegal but is legal for medical or recreational use in many states.
The Entourage Effect
Many experts believe that CBD and THC work best together, a phenomenon known as the "entourage effect." Using full-spectrum products can enhance the therapeutic benefits of both cannabinoids.
