Traveling with medical marijuana can be tricky due to conflicting state and federal laws. Here's what you need to know to stay safe and legal.
Domestic Travel
Flying with marijuana is risky because the TSA is a federal agency, and marijuana is federally illegal. However, TSA's primary focus is security threats, not drugs. If they find it, they are required to refer it to local law enforcement.
Driving Across State Lines
Crossing state lines with marijuana is a federal offense, even if you are traveling between two legal states. It's best to purchase your medicine at your destination if possible.
Reciprocity
Check if your destination state offers reciprocity, meaning they recognize out-of-state medical cards. If so, you can purchase medicine there legally.
International Travel
Never travel internationally with cannabis. It is illegal in most countries and can lead to severe penalties, including imprisonment.
Storage
If you are traveling within a legal state, keep your medicine in its original packaging with your patient label attached. Store it in the trunk or a locked container, out of reach of the driver.
